Ware - Cultural Scene
Ware, Hertfordshire, is 21 miles to the north of central London. In the Domesday Book, published in 1086, during the period of William I, "The Conqueror", (r. 1066-1087), the town was recorded as Waras. This is derived from natural weirs in the River Lea.
Ware has come a long way since the Middle Ages: at the end of the 19th century, malt making was established. In 1886, Dennis Wickham set up a bottling plant. The world-famous firm of D. Wickham & Co became manufacturers of railcars and construction equipment, and closed eventually in 1981. A new plant for pharmaceutical research and development was built in Park Road, during World War II. It was originally known as Allenburys, and merged with Glaxo in 1958. It is now part of GlaxoSmithKline.
In 1956, the Ware Town Council coat of arms was issued by the College of Arms to Ware Urban District Council, and transferred to Ware Town Council in 1975. The arms originate from barge rudders, concerning the bargemen of Ware, with the red and white striping on the rudders being the livery colours of the City of London. This reflects the Ware bargemen's free entry rights to that City. The crossed coach horns refer to the town's long history as a coaching town. The sheaves of barley refer to the malting history of Ware.

Scott's Grotto, 28/34 Scotts Road, Ware, Hertfordshire, SG12, is a Grade I listed building. It is a unique gem, a conservation preserved site, and is a magical place of rooms and tunnels, made out of shells, fossils, flint and coloured glass. The tunnels extend over 20 metres into the chalk hillside, and there are six chambers. The deepest chamber is 10 metres below the hilltop. Scott's Grotto was built in the 1760s by local poet John Scott, a "most active and public spirited man". In 1990, the grotto was restored, with an entrance porch added, and lighting of the main chamber was installed. Scott's Grotto is open only from April to October. It is the largest shell grotto in the United Kingdom.
Ware Priory Lido, Priory Street, Ware, Hertfordshire, SG12, was originally built in 1934. It was rebuilt in 2016, with new changing rooms, reception area, toilets, events room, grass and new paving around the pool. There is a 30m main pool, and a teaching pool. There are fully qualified lifeguards and a first aider on duty at all times. The lido is open in the Summer season, and it is in the grounds of Ware Priory, which is a premier conference and wedding venue.
