Burnt Oak - Cultural Scene
Burnt Oak is situated in north-west London, in the borough of Barnet. It is 9 miles from the centre of London. In 1754, the name Burnt Oak referred to a field on the eastern side of Edgware Road, with the original name Watling Street. In this field, an ancient oak tree at some stage before the 1750s, had been burned by a lightning strike. At this time, the area was the Ancient Parish of Hendon.
A common field called Sheveshill was originally at the site of the present Underground station. However, in the 1830s, a workhouse replaced the field. In 1859, a union school was built, and houses were built, to serve the workhouse. The workhouse infirmary has since drastically changed, to become Edgware community hospital. To the south, nearby, a farmhouse was built. In 1922, it still had a cow-keeper.
Until 1924, the area was predominantly rural. In this year, during the reign of George V, (r.1910-1936), the original Burnt Oak station was opened. This was two months after the opening of the extension of the Hampstead & Highgate Line, from Hendon Central to Edgware. This is the Northern Line we know today.
The development of the railway station led to much building growth, and a significant increase in people living in the area. In 1921, Burnt Oak's population was 1,016; and in 1931, it had risen to 21,545. However, in 2022, the population was 17,897.
