Culture and History in Colchester
The name Colindale probably derives from the Colinn family who lived in the 16th century. The settlement originated in the late 19th century near the older but now lost hamlet of Colindeep, which lay in the valley of the Silk Stream, a tributary of the River Brent.
Once considered part of Hendon but now separated from that borough by the M1, the east side of Colindale has long been associated with aviation. In the years before 1914, aircraft building and pilot training dominated the locality – and these activities increased after the outbreak of the First World War, as related industries were drawn in by government intervention. Formed in 1918, the Royal Air Force used Hendon Aerodrome, which the government acquired in 1925. During the Second World War the airfield became a transport, communications and training base, but its unsuitability for post-war jet aircraft meant the last flying units left in 1957, although the RAF Hendon did not officially close until 1988. The RAF Museum opened on the plinth in 1972 in two of the airfield's original hangars, to which further exhibition rooms have since been added.
