The UK Government has announced that rough sleepers will be given a safe place to stay and the support needed to help turn their lives around. The Department for Levelling Up has announced an increase in funding for the Night Shelter Transformation Fund. More than 3 million will be made available to shelters to provide more beds and life-changing support services. This will enable thousands of individuals currently sleeping on the streets to access secure accommodation. Shelters can use the funding to help people experiencing homelessness stay off the streets. The funds can also be used for providing professional staff, drug or alcohol advice, and financial assistance.
This financial support comes after the £9m+ funding delivered in the first round. It helped fund 80 organisations over three years, targeting the neediest areas. The second-round cash support will help more rough sleepers avoid the streets and find a secure place to sleep. According to the Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Felicity Buchan, night shelters are often the first step for rough sleepers to get off the streets and turn their lives around. It provides a safe place to sleep and access to support.
The Minister visited the Gravesham Sanctuary recently to check how the Night Shelter Transformation Fund helps organisations provide these services. The Night Shelter Transformation Fund is the next step in the Government's commitment to end rough sleeping permanently. In 2022, the Department for Levelling Up introduced the Rough Sleeping Initiative, a three-year program worth £500m. This initiative aimed to address the issue of rough sleeping and was accompanied by an additional £1billion allocated to councils over three years. The funding was intended to support councils to prevent and combat rough sleeping in areas most needed.
The Night Shelter Transformation Fund is an extremely important project for the Government, helping them to get closer to the goal of providing dignified accommodation. By making additional funding available, the Government ensures that even more people can benefit. Projects such as Gravesham Sanctuary not only provide material support by way of a place to sleep and casework support, but they also provide the crucial element of community in one's journey out of homelessness. The shelter allows guests to stay for a few weeks or months until they move into settled accommodation. Rough sleepers are considered vulnerable as they are at a high risk of experiencing physical and mental health issues and other social disadvantages.
What steps are being taken by the Government to end rough sleeping?
Apart from initiating steps such as the Night Shelter Transformation Fund, the Government provides support through organisations and communities to create pathways for stable and secure housing. This helps individuals without a fixed or regular place to stay. They are forced to sleep in public spaces such as streets, parks, doorways, or places not intended for habitation.
