History of Tower Hamlets
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets came into being in 1965, a merger of the former metropolitan boroughs of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney. The name stretches back much further, though. The first documented mention in 1554 was a catch-all description of the settlements north and east of the Tower of London.
Tower Hamlets gets its name from being the home of the Tower of London and the hamlets surrounding it. Its first recorded use was in the 16th century when the Constable of the Tower of London also commanded the Tower Hamlet Militia as the Lord Lieutenant of Tower Hamlets.

What our CEO, Mary Anne Bowring, likes about Tower Hamlets
Yes I have been watching Tower Hamlets develop over the past few years and really is one borough oozing with potential. I am also a serious amateur history buff and didn’t realise how ancient this part of London was back in the old days ! Can you believe that the Victorians had renamed Petticoat Lane ‘Middlesex Street’ in the 1830s to avoid any reference to underwear, although the market there is still known by the original name.
Tower Hamlets was also one of the six host boroughsfor the London 2012 Olympic Games. The borough’s ‘Gifted and Talented’ programme has been set up to identify and support young sporting talent accross the borough.
More History...
The docks around Canary Wharf were once part of the world’s largest port, and the area takes its name from the many goods imported from the Canary Islands.
Within Tower Hamlet, lots of amour and even the old Crown Jewels can be found there as they are housed in the White Tower ( Tower of London).
Things to do in Tower Hamlets...
There are lots of things to do in the borough such as visiting the Museum of London Docklands , Museum of Childhood that has toys dating back to the 1600 or maybe you want to visit the markets including Petticoat Lane and Columbia Road flower market.
Additionally there are 150 shops that sell unique and quircky items if you were looking for something different and out of the ordinary. There's also lots of various retro and vintage shops with great fashion, design, gift and jewellery stores. Most stores stock products which are individually designed and made locally. If your a fan of music , then in the borough you can find shops with collections of vinyl, ukuleles and mandolins.
