Initially a common for grazing land, Plumstead Common was to become a community meeting place and eventually a public park, reflecting social changes to the locality. It was during the Victorian times that rapid expansion took place with lines of terraced houses springing up to house the expanding population. However, World War II left a long shadow as war-related destruction on homes and commerce was widespread. Post-war regeneration saw regrowth spark the development of new housing estates and improved infrastructure, with extension to the Underground.
