History of Oxford Circus

Here’s a detailed overview of the rich history of Oxford Circus, the iconic junction of Oxford Street and Regent Street:


Origins & Design

  • The junction, originally named Regent Circus North, was conceived by architect John Nash in the early 1810s as part of his grand redesign of Regent Street. Parliament later renamed it Oxford Circus around 1836.
  • Nash’s intent was both aesthetic and functional: to create a spacious, concave intersection implemented through the New Street Act of 1813. This cleared numerous buildings, required the rehousing of several displaced residents, and set the architectural tone for the area .

Late 19th–Early 20th Century Rebuild

  • In the early 1900s, Regent Street underwent major redevelopment. The four corner quadrants of Oxford Circus were reconstructed between 1913–1928 under architect Henry Tanner, showcasing refined Beaux–Arts and French-inspired architecture clad in Portland stone. These buildings remain largely intact and are Grade II listed.

Transport & Cultural Shifts

  • Oxford Circus Underground station opened in 1900 on the Central Line, followed by Bakerloo in 1906 and the Victoria Line in 1969. The junction’s significance grew as a transport nexus, with station expansions in 1912 and 1923 to handle rising crowd levels.
  • The area attracted retail giants like Selfridges, Peter Robinson department store, John Lewis, and M&S; these resilient enterprises helped shape its status as London’s premier shopping destination.

 Post-War & Modernisation

  • Despite damaging blows from bombing during the Blitz and attacks related to the IRA, Oxford Circus and its characterful buildings were restored and continued to flourish.
  • In the 1960s, an experimental traffic-free trial introduced pedestrian-friendly features—paving the way for more recent proposals to pedestrianise Oxford Street, echoing the 1970s trial.
