History of Hillingdon

The name of the borough is most likely derived and referred to ‘the hill of a man called Hilda’, although others have construed it as ‘the fort on a hill’ and cited dubious stories of a battle in which the Mercians defeated the West Saxons. It was formed from the districts of Hayes and Harlington, Ruislip-Northwood, Uxbridge, and Yiewsley and West Drayton in the historic county of Middlesex. Today, Hillingdon is home to Heathrow Airport and Brunel University, and is the second largest of the 32 London boroughs by area.

What our CEO, Mary Anne Bowring, likes about Hillingdon

Yes I have been watching Haringay develop over the past few years and really is one borough oozing with potential. I am also a serious amateur history buff and didn’t realise how ancient this part of London was back in the old days ! Did you know that the Nobel Prize winner and famous biologist  Alexander Flemming who discovered penicillin in 1939 was based at Harefield Hospital in Hillingdon and If you visit the hospital today you will see a plaque commemorating this.

More History...

Aside from Heathrow, Hillingdon nurtures various lively town centres in urban spots such as Uxbridge, and is home to the key European offices of major brands including Cadburys, Canon, Apple and PWC which brings many commuters into the borough as well as out.

The second largest borough by area, Hillingdon has a lot to offer. With the economic prosperity brought in by Heathrow and Crossrail, it’s becoming a thriving business and commuter hub. Yet it’s also an oasis of green, with vast acres of open spaces, parks and golf courses. If you’re looking for a good-value property with excellent transport connections, Hillingdon could be a great place to invest.
