History of Harold Wood

Harold Wood, located in the London Borough of Havering, has roots dating back to the medieval period and is believed to be named after King Harold Godwinson. Historically part of the parish of Hornchurch, the area was known for its woodlands and farmland. It remained a quiet, rural location for centuries, with scattered farms and cottages across the landscape. The name “Horalds Wood” was recorded as early as the 13th century, reflecting the area’s long-standing connection to England’s early kings and its natural surroundings.

A major transformation began in the mid-19th century when developers bought land from Gubbins Farm and, in partnership with the Great Eastern Railway, opened Harold Wood station in 1868. This boosted access to London and encouraged housing development. In the early 20th century, Harold Wood became home to a large convalescent hospital, which later became Harold Wood Hospital, serving the area until its closure in 2006. The hospital site has since been redeveloped into modern housing. Today, Harold Wood is a well-connected suburban community with a mix of historic charm, green spaces, and modern amenities.
