History of Northwood
Northwood is a town in the London Borough of Hillingdon. It is located 12 miles (19.3 km) northwest of Charing Cross and has a population of 11,068 according to the 2011 census. Northwood was originally part of the parish of Ruislip in the county of Middlesex. The name "Northwood" is first recorded in 1435 as Northwode, and is formed from the Old English 'north' and 'wudu', meaning the northern part of the wood. The Saxon charters show that the original Saxon settlement was based around what is now The Broadway, and various archaeological remains have been found in the area. In 1086, the Domesday Book shows that Northwood had 17 households and two smallholder holdings. By 1294, the manor of Ruislip included both Northwood and South Ruislip, which were described as hamlets within Ruislip parish.
The different villages of Ruislip were separated by large tracts of open common land, used for grazing. This made it difficult for any one village to expand without encroaching on the common land and causing friction with neighbouring villages. As a result, Ruislip was not incorporated as a municipal borough until 1545.
New developments in Northwood
The Northwood & Pinner Association has been working to improve the area for residents since it was set up in 1923. One of their most recent projects is the regeneration of Northwood town centre, which was completed in 2019. The project includes a new library, leisure centre, and health centre.
The Northwood & Pinner Association is also behind the development of a new community garden, which will be located on Pinner Road. The garden will include a children's play area, raised beds, and a sensory garden. Work is also underway on a new development of flats on Oxhey Lane. The development will include 22 one-bedroom flats and four two-bedroom flats.
A development of just two 5 bedroom detached homes, Moor Park Road sits at the heart of the highly coveted and picturesque town of Northwood. Inspired by the Victorian and Edwardian architecture of the town’s conservation area, Ashwood House and Claridge House are seamless additions to the luxury homesteads that Northwood is renowned for
