History of Ickenham

Ickenham, a picturesque village located 17.5 miles northwest of central London in the borough of Hillingdon, has a rich history dating back to the medieval period. The name "Ickenham" originates from the Old English "homestead/village of Tic(c)a," with the "T" being dropped in the 13th-14th centuries. The village’s origins can be traced to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as "Ticheham." Archaeological findings, including Roman fields and pottery fragments dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries, highlight the area’s long history. Ickenham was originally part of two manors: Ickenham and Swakeleys. Over time, it passed through various noble families, such as the Mandevilles, Charltons, and Shorediches, with Swakeleys becoming home to the Swalcliff family in the 14th century.

Ickenham remained largely rural until the early 20th century. The opening of Ickenham station on the Metropolitan Railway in 1905 spurred significant development, transforming the village into a suburban area. The station was later connected to the District Line in 1910 and to the Piccadilly Line in 1933, further increasing the village’s connectivity to central London.
