Elmbridge is named after the Elmbridge Hundred which appears in Doomsday Book of 1086 as Amelebrige. The district was formed on 1 April 1974 through the Local Government Act 1972, and the district is formed from the principal towns of Esher, Cobham, Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge and Molesey.
