Block Management Downham

Downham's No 1 Managing agent

Block and Estate Management is about the minutia done well: the role of a Managing Agent is technical, administrative, practical and political. It takes joined up thinking to do what we do well as well as sufficient resource to react to whatever is necessary day-to-day.

As a Managing Agent we know our true business is building relationships with people. Our people are empowered and know that they can make a difference to how people feel about where they live. We call our 'Property Manager's 'Relationship Managers’ to embody our values which are to build relationships, add value, and to take the initiative. We lead the market in transparency and focusing on risk, cash, repairs and place making, usually in that order, and was the first Managing Agent to introduce a ' money back guarantee ’.

Being who we are would be impossible without our passionately committed people, whose qualifications we sponsor and who we support professionally to be the best they can be, as achieving a national training award and our Silver IIP status confirms.

History of Downham

Downham, located in the southeast of London within the borough of Lewisham, has a rich history that dates back to medieval times. Originally part of the parish of Lewisham, the area was mostly rural farmland until the 19th century. In the 1800s, with the expansion of the railway system and the growth of London, Downham began to shift from agricultural land to a more suburban development. The construction of the Downham Estate in the late 19th century marked a turning point, as it provided housing for the growing population. The estate was primarily built to accommodate workers, offering affordable housing for families, and it significantly transformed the landscape, turning Downham into a more urban area.

Throughout the 20th century, Downham continued to evolve, especially with post-war redevelopment projects that included new housing estates. The area has a working-class heritage, with many of its residents historically employed in nearby industries and the service sector. Over time, Downham has remained a primarily residential area with a strong sense of community, and its green spaces, such as Southend Park, contribute to its local charm. While it may not have the same level of fame or prestige as other parts of London, Downham’s history reflects the broader trends of urbanization and suburban growth in the capital. Today, it is a diverse and vibrant part of Lewisham, offering a mix of housing, local amenities, and a suburban lifestyle.

Attracting over 270,000 visitors in 2023, this historic site offers immersive tours of its medieval and Georgian tunnels, which were constructed to strengthen defenses against sieges and Napoleon's invasion threats. From 1st April to 31st October, visitors can explore the building during guided tours provided by the Dover Society.
