History of Barking and Dagenham
Every London Borough has nurtered mega pop artists – why are we telling you this I hear you ask….it’s because Ringley are based in Camden, the epicentre of all things music and Barking isn’t that far away !
Which pop band – oh yes, the one and only Singer song writer and actvist Stephen William Bragg, born on the 20thDecember 1957. His music was influenced by many differnet types of genres including folk music and punk rock. Billy was born In Barking which is in the eastern part of Greater London. From being a memeber of a punk band called Riff Raff and leaving the British Army he took every opportunity he could to get on stage with his electric guitar and begin his part punk, part follksinger carrer. Billy was being inspired everyday for his songs, particularly news headlines, such as the hit “Never Buy The Sun” was written after reading about a phone hacking scandal.
His debut album, Life’s a Riot with Spy vs. Spy, brought critical acclaim, reached the British Top 30, and yielded the hit “A New England” in 1984. A committed socialist, Bragg played a number of benefit performances during the British miners’ strike of 1984–85.

What our CEO, Mary Anne Bowring, likes about Barking and Dagenham
Yes, I have been watching Barking and Dagenham develop and evolve over the past few years and really is one borough oozing with potential. I am also a serious amateur history buff and didn’t realise how ancient this part of London was back in the old days! It seems Barking and Dagenham is a kindred spirit to our native Camden. Did you also know that Valence House can be found in the Borough at Becontree Avenue whic is the local histroy musueum hosuing artificats about those who lived in the Barking and Dagenham many years ago. It is the only surviving of the five manor houses of Dagenham from the 13th century.
More History....
Barking and Dagenham is one of those places, and although some people describe it as in Essex, it has been a London borough for more than 50 years! It's really up and coming because did you know its Barking Riverside area is designated as a national priority for urban regeneration.
In 1854, the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway was built through the south of Dagenham, near the River Thames. In 1885 a new direct route from Barking to Pitsea, via Upminster, was built with Dagenham station opened just north of the village. Dagenham Dock station opened on the original southern route in 1908. Dagenham was still an undeveloped village, when building of the vast Becontree estate by the London County Council began in the early 1920s.
Culture
Whalebone Lane and the Eastern Avenue, diagonally opposite the Moby-Dick public house, is the site of Marks Manor House, a large 15th century moated building demolished in the early 19th century. During WW2 the adjoining fields were used by the Royal Artillery for an anti-aircraft battery; later a prisoner-of-war camp for Germans was erected there. Further south down Whalebone Lane on the corner of the High Road is the Tollgate pub. This stands on the site of the milestone which marked the ten mile (16 km) limit from the City of London and the turnpike toll gate.
