History of Portsmouth

Portsmouth has a rich and long history which can be traced back all the way back to Roman Britain, where 'Portus Adurni' was built, a fort near Portchester in the late 3rd Century. However, in the Anglo-Saxon records there was a warrior called Port, who killed a noble in Portsmouth in 501, and Winston Churchill attributes the areas founding to Port in ' A History of the English-Speaking People'.

There are many to do in Portsmouth, for instance you could visit some of the many historical landmarks that include HMS Victory which is the oldest navy ship in the world that is still in commission, or you could visit the Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum which is situated on Mile End Terrace, which to no surprise it the birth place of Charles Dickens.

Portsmouth has a great history of producing incredible writers, as previously mentioned, Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, but he is in a long list of other famous writers that include, Arthur Conan Doyle who practised medicine in the city, H.G Wells who lived in the city during the 1880s, and Rudyard Kipling.
