History of Milton Keynes

The name 'Milton Keynes' came from reusing the name of an original historic village in the area, that village todya is now more generally known as 'Milton Keynes Village' to distinguish it from the modern settlement. 

The area was largely developed after since the 1960s, as the UK Government decided that a further generation of new towns was needed to relieve the excess demand of housing in London. This new town, Milton Keynes, was to be the biggest yet, with a target population of 250,000 and a total area of about 22,000 acres.
