Harrow, located in northwest London, has a long and rich history that dates back to Saxon times. The name "Harrow" comes from the Old English "hearg," meaning a heathen temple, suggesting the area may have been a site of pagan worship before the arrival of Christianity. Harrow-on-the-Hill, the historic heart of the area, became an important religious site with the establishment of St Mary’s Church in the 11th century. The area remained largely rural for centuries and gained prominence in the 16th century with the founding of Harrow School in 1572, one of the UK’s most prestigious independent schools.
The arrival of the railway in the 19th century transformed Harrow from a quiet hilltop village into a thriving suburban town. New housing developments spread across the surrounding areas, accommodating commuters and families drawn to its green spaces and strong educational reputation. In 1965, Harrow became an official London borough, combining historical charm with modern urban growth. Today, Harrow is known for its cultural diversity, historic architecture, and strong sense of community, while Harrow School and Harrow-on-the-Hill continue to reflect its distinguished heritage.
