History of Dagenham

Dagenham, located in East London, has a history that stretches back to its origins as a rural parish in Essex. The name "Dagenham" is believed to derive from "Dæccanhaam," meaning "home of a man named Dæcca," and it first appeared in records in 666 AD. Historically, it was part of the manor of Barking, owned by Barking Abbey. For centuries, Dagenham remained a small agricultural community, with its fertile lands supporting farming. The River Thames played a significant role in its development, providing a natural boundary and facilitating trade. The area’s rural character persisted well into the early 20th century.

The transformation of Dagenham began in the 1920s with the construction of the Becontree Estate, one of the largest public housing projects in the world.
