History of Croydon
Since the majority of place names in the area are from an Anglo-Saxon origin, the theory acknowledged by most language experts, is that the name Croydon, derives originally from the Anglo-Saxon 'croh', meaning 'crocus' and 'denu' meaning 'valley'. This indicated that the area of croydon, once was a centre for the cultivation of Saffron.
Aside from that, the town lies on the Roman Road from London to Portsdale, with some archaeological evidence of there being a Roman Settlement in the area.
Property values
In the last 12 months, the majority of property sales in Croydon involved terraced properties which sold for an average price of £421,298. Flats sold for an average price of £306,857, while semi-detached properties fetched £521,585.
The priciest area within Croydon was Woodcote Green (£890,681) and the least expensive was Forestdale (£297,434).
These prices represent a 7% rise on those in the prior 12 months.
