History of Barking

Barking is a town in East London, England, and forms part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It is 8.8 miles (14.2 km) east of Charing Cross and is one of 35 major centres identified in the London Plan.

The town historically formed an ancient parish in the county of Essex. Its economic history is characterised by a shift from fishing and farming to market gardening and industrial development, and then to post-industrial decline. 

The original parish church, All Saints, was destroyed by the London Blitz in 1940 and replaced with a modern building on the same site, which remains Barking's main church today.

New developments in Barking

There are a number of large-scale developments taking place in Barking at present, which is likely to have a positive impact on property prices in the area.

The most significant development is the Barking Riverside scheme, which will see the construction of 11,000 new homes on a former brownfield site. This project is currently underway and is due to be completed by 2023.

In addition, there are plans to build a new £1 billion shopping centre in Barking town centre, which is expected to create around 5,000 new jobs. This development is currently in the planning stage and is due to be completed by 2025.

Finally, there are also plans to build a new £500 million business district in Barking, which is expected to create around 10,000 new jobs. This development is currently in the planning stage and is due to be completed by 2030.

Barking has a vibrant cultural scene, with a number of events and activities taking place throughout the year. 

The most popular event is the Barking Carnival, which is held every summer and attracts around 80,000 people. The carnival features a parade of floats, live music, and food stalls. 

Barking is a historic town with plenty to see and do. The town's Abbey is a grade I listed building and one of the most important religious sites in England, while Barking Park is a large 64-acre public park perfect for a day out.
