Is Your Home at Risk from Flooding?

Recent Flood Warnings in the UK

Numerous flood warnings have been issued across the UK. During these times, block managers should prepare for worst-case scenarios by delivering on-site protection such as sandbags or flood barriers to at-risk properties.

Precautionary Measures for Residents

If flood warnings are broadcast, residents should take the following steps:

  • Move cars to higher ground to prevent water damage.
  • Remove belongings from ground-floor flats and store them on higher levels.
  • Make arrangements for pets with friends or family.
  • Plan ahead for emergency accommodation in case evacuation becomes necessary.

Is There Emergency Accommodation Available?

Not all block insurance policies cover emergency accommodation. It is essential to check with your property manager or landlord. Block managers should communicate with residents, particularly those who are elderly or vulnerable, to ensure they are prepared for potential evacuation.

What to Take in Case of Evacuation

Residents should have a checklist of essential items, including:

  • Medical supplies and prescriptions
  • Mobile phones and chargers
  • Bank cards and identification
Planning ahead can help people evacuate safely and calmly in an emergency.

Flood Insurance and Protection Measures

Everyone should ensure their contents insurance includes flood cover. Residents should also check with their property manager, letting agent, or landlord about existing flood protection measures. If a flood emergency and evacuation plan is not in place, residents can request one.

Staying Informed and Prepared

  • The Environment Agency offers a free flood warning service to alert residents at risk.
  • Ground-floor residents should request sandbags for emergency use.
  • Renters in houses should speak with their landlord or agent about flood risks and protection measures.

Taking these steps can help ensure personal safety and minimize damage during a flood.
