How to protect your home this winter - and don't forget the insurance!

Protect Your Home This Winter – & Don't Forget the Insurance!

As the days get shorter and nights grow longer, home security becomes more important than ever. Did you know that nearly a third of people living in flats don’t have contents insurance? With burglaries more common in winter, now is the perfect time to review your home security and ensure you have the right insurance policy in place

Burglary Risks Are Higher in Winter

Research from MoneySupermarket reveals that while many people worry about home security in the summer, burglaries are actually more common in autumn and winter. More than half of all break-ins occur during the evening or night, taking advantage of darker hours to remain undetected.

Essential Tips to Secure Your Home

To protect your home from potential intruders, follow these simple yet effective security measures:

  • Close your windows – Dark evenings make it easier for burglars to slip in unnoticed, so never leave windows open unattended.
  • Keep keys safe – Store them away from doors and windows to prevent easy access.
  • Lock away tools and ladders – These can be used by burglars to break into your home, so keep them out of sight.
  • Use light timers – Creating the illusion that someone is home can deter intruders.
  • Change locks if needed – If you’ve recently moved in, previous residents may still have keys. If renting, check with your landlord before making changes.

Beware of Burglary Tricks

Thieves often use clever tricks to target homes. In Ireland, burglars have been placing tape over door locks to monitor whether a house is occupied. Regularly check for signs of tampering and take steps to make your home appear lived-in when away. Cancel deliveries, ask a neighbor to collect your post, and always ensure doors and windows are locked.

The Importance of Contents Insurance

Many people living in flats assume they are safe from burglaries, but what about fire or water damage? Leaks in apartment buildings cause thousands of pounds in damage each year, making contents insurance essential. Surprisingly, the cost of insurance is often lower than a typical broadband or TV subscription—so don’t take the risk!

Final Thoughts

Home security isn’t just about preventing burglaries—it’s about protecting yourself from unexpected damages and losses. By following these security tips and ensuring you have the right insurance in place, you can enjoy peace of mind this winter. Stay safe, stay covered!

Leaseholders Win Right to Manage Chelsea Bridge Wharf in Landmark Decision
Chelsea Bridge Wharf’s leaseholders have made history by winning the Right to Manage (RTM) the £1 billion riverside complex, home to the Berkeley Group’s headquarters. This triumph shifts control from traditional freeholders to residents, aligning with ongoing UK leasehold reforms. The decision signals a pivotal moment for leaseholder empowerment, particularly at high-value sites where financial stakes have long been skewed toward developers a...

Lockdown 2: Business as usual
So we’re all back in lockdown from tomorrow. Most of us could see this coming – and half the country has been under Covid-restrictions for several weeks already - so it’s not much of a shock. But what is perhaps more of a surprise is how different we all feel this time around. Not so much blitz spirit as battle fatigue. It’s been a very long year for all of us – and it’s not over yet! But the good news is that for the property market – and our...

IRPM/ARMA merger to go ahead
It’s official - ARMA and the IRPM are to merge. Following votes among members of both organisations last Thursday the two bodies say they will now “work to progress the approved merger to completion”.So what will that mean for their customers? In the short term, probably nothing much. If your property manager has IRPM qualifications, as many of ours do at Ringley, nothing will change. They will continue to do their job in exactly the same way ...
