New UK Government data reveals a significant increase in applications for heat pump grants. An impressive 75 percent surge was reported in February 2024 when compared to the same period in 2023. The increase in the number of applications follows the announcement of imminent changes to the scheme. These changes aim to make heat pumps more affordable and easier to install. Families stand to receive grants of £7,500 off iof nstallation costs, positioning the Boiler Upgrade Scheme as one of the most generous in Europe.
According to the latest figures, the surge in demand signifies the success of the government's net-zero plan. The increase of 50 percent in government grants has fuelled the rise in applications, marking the fourth consecutive month, with over 2,000 applications. Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho underlined the importance of supporting families in making their homes warmer and reducing emissions without financial strain. She highlighted the positive impact of the 50 percent increase in heat pump grants, attributing the application surge to the government's effective measures.
Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, echoed similar sentiments, noting the soaring demand for heat pumps as the government makes the transition to electric heating simple and accessible. He emphasised the role of the boosted £7,500 grants in helping families create warmer homes while lowering emissions.
As of February, there have been 35,741 applications, with close to £127 million in vouchers paid out to customers. The Government's efforts and tax cuts announced in the Spring Budget underscore its commitment to supporting families.
The figures coincide with the government's Welcome Home to Energy Efficiency campaign, which promotes the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and highlights other efficiency measures to save money on bills. Changes to the scheme criteria will make heat pumps more affordable and easier to install. Homeowners will no longer be required to install cavity walls or loft insulation to qualify for the scheme. While well-insulated properties remain a priority for heating efficiency, removing mandatory insulation requirements allows households to make improvements based on their needs and budget.
In addition, homeowners can seek support through schemes such as the Great British Insulation Scheme and Energy Company Obligation (ECO), set to assist up to 700,000 families with home improvements by March 2026.
The Government has published a guide of FAQs on heat pumps and their installation to support potential heat pump owners further and increase consumer awareness and understanding. Industry experts have welcomed the sustained increase in interest in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Government's efforts to promote heat pump adoption. Charlotte Lee, CEO of the Heat Pump Association, pointed out that heat pumps efficiently decarbonise home heating and improve energy security. As the Government continues to drive initiatives to promote heat pump adoption, the future looks promising for homeowners seeking sustainable heating solutions.
