How will the homes of the future look?

A Glimpse Into the Future of Housing

Ever wondered what the homes of the future might look like? Over the weekend, we got a glimpse as Housing Minister Christopher Pincher announced the finalists of the Home of 2030 competition. This initiative aims to showcase innovative and sustainable housing designs that could define the way we live by 2030.

The Six Finalist Designs

The competition has shortlisted six finalists, each presenting unique, forward-thinking housing concepts:

  • The Positive Collective – Homes that reduce carbon emissions while encouraging social interaction, featuring communal gardens and biodiversity-friendly spaces.
  • HLM Architects – Houses built using interchangeable parts, creating a circular economy that minimizes waste.
  • Igloo Regeneration – Homes designed with simple frame structures and standard components, integrated into walkable, vibrant neighborhoods.
  • Openstudio Architects Ltd – A modular approach combining sustainable, age-friendly spaces with communal green areas and private gardens.
  • Outpost Architects – The Janus home, constructed from 98% organic biomass material such as timber and straw.
  • Studio OPEN – Homes centered around a shared garden, built using locally sourced timber to reduce environmental impact.

The Goal of the Home of 2030 Competition

The competition was launched in March to encourage designs for environmentally friendly homes that will also support independent living as people age. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader housing reforms, aiming to improve the quality of housing across the UK.

Financial Support for Innovative Housing Solutions

Each of the six finalists has been awarded £40,000 in funding to refine and develop their plans. These designs will be further explored in collaboration with Homes England development partners, with the potential for real-world implementation on Homes England land.

Aiming for Zero-Carbon, Beautiful Communities

The ultimate goal of the competition is to make tree-lined streets the norm while introducing aesthetic and environmentally friendly housing solutions. The emphasis is on building “zero carbon ready” homes, ensuring that they will not require retrofitting in the future to meet sustainability goals.

Looking Ahead to the Future of Housing

A final winner will be announced this autumn, and selected projects could soon become part of future housing developments. Will this competition reshape the way we build homes in the next decade? We have ten years to find out.
