Ever wondered what the homes of the future might look like? Over the weekend, we got a glimpse as Housing Minister Christopher Pincher announced the finalists of the Home of 2030 competition. This initiative aims to showcase innovative and sustainable housing designs that could define the way we live by 2030.
The competition has shortlisted six finalists, each presenting unique, forward-thinking housing concepts:
The competition was launched in March to encourage designs for environmentally friendly homes that will also support independent living as people age. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader housing reforms, aiming to improve the quality of housing across the UK.
Each of the six finalists has been awarded £40,000 in funding to refine and develop their plans. These designs will be further explored in collaboration with Homes England development partners, with the potential for real-world implementation on Homes England land.
The ultimate goal of the competition is to make tree-lined streets the norm while introducing aesthetic and environmentally friendly housing solutions. The emphasis is on building “zero carbon ready” homes, ensuring that they will not require retrofitting in the future to meet sustainability goals.
A final winner will be announced this autumn, and selected projects could soon become part of future housing developments. Will this competition reshape the way we build homes in the next decade? We have ten years to find out.
