Penny Mordaunt, the Leader of the House of Commons, recently provided a progress update about the Renters Reforms Bill. The update was in response to concern expressed by Labour MP Andrew Western about the slow progress of the Renters Reform Bill. The bill was initially introduced to Parliament with great anticipation four weeks ago during its First Reading in the Commons. However, no information was provided about the exact date for its Second Reading.
During a Commons Question Time session, Andrew Western inquired about the timing of the Second Reading. While it is not a standard practice to provide progress details to individual MPs, Penny Mordaunt, speaking on behalf of the government, strongly hinted at a positive outcome. She acknowledged the widespread interest in the bill among members of the House and suggested that Andrew Western would not have to wait much longer for an update.
Earlier in the week, the Renters Reform Coalition (RRC), comprising 20 advocacy groups such as Acorn, known for taking direct action against tenants-increasingly-love-corporate-landlords'>landlords and letting agents, organized a drop-in event at Parliament to brief MPs on the bill. Social media posts indicate that Labour MPs, including Lloyd Russell-Moyle and Rebecca Long-Bailey, both of whom held shadow cabinet positions during Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, were prominently involved in the event. It appears from recent developments that the slow progress of the Renters Reform Bill has raised concerns among Labour MPs, leading to pressure on the Leader of the House of Commons to provide an update.
The bill's Second Reading is expected to be announced in due course. Meanwhile, the Renters Reform Coalition continues to actively engage with MPs to raise awareness about the bill's importance and garner support.
