The government has extended its eviction ban for yet another month, until September 20, but what happens then? Many tenants could lose their income over the coming months as state support winds down. About 230,000 people face being homeless when the suspension is lifted, according to a YouGov survey for the housing charity Shelter. A third of landlords are retired, according to the government’s English Private Landlord Survey. “These landlords may well not have a mortgage to claim a repayment holiday on, rely on property income and without rent or furlough monies may struggle to survive,” says Mary-Anne Bowring, the creator of the lettings platform PlanetRent.
