History of Whitchurch & Tongwynlais

Whitchurch draws its name from White Church. The first mention of the area was in 1126 when the land was granted to Llandaff Cathedral and a chapel was built where Old Church Road now stands.

While Tongwynlais is said to have obtained its name from the words 'ton' and 'Gwynlais'; 'ton' meaning ley land, i.e. pasture and 'Gwynlais', the name of a local family, thus "pasture of Gwynlais"'

There are many things to do in Whitchurch & Tongwynlais, for instance in Tongwynlais, you could visit the Castell Coch which is Victorian Era folly castle, which was built upon the ruins of a 13th Century castle. Whereas in Whitchurch, you could join the local rugby club, nicknamed the 'Whitchurch Warriors', who play their games at Hailey Park.

Fun fact, the area of Tongwynlais has pop-culture ties, with the band 'RocketGoldStar' writing a song about the village, recording it on their 1996 album, likewise, the Welsh glam metal band 'Tigertailz' named a song on Disc 1 of their Thrill Pistol album "Tongwynlais Fly".
