History of Splott

Splott is a traditional part of the City of Cardiff with the area largely residential with alot of housing stock dating from the Victorian Era, which were built during the expansion of the City's iron and steel industry to house workers in these factories.

The early history of Splott is that the land was owned by a family known as the Bawdrips; the land consisted mainly of two farms, called the Upper and Lower Splott, situated between Roath Village and the sea.

    Splott is a ward just east of the Cardiff city centre, it was built up in the late 19th century on the land of two farms of the same name: Upper Splott and Lower Splott Farms. Splott is characterised by its rows of tightly knit terraced houses which were built to house workers during the expansion of the iron & steel industry. According to the 2011 Census, 13,261 people live in Splott, making it one of Cardiffs smaller wards.

    New developments in Splott

    Agate Street

    Plans have been proposed to turn the site of a former bingo hall, Riva Bingo, into 39 affordable flats in Cardiff. The old bingo hall had closed in 2009 and the building was damaged by fire in 2015 and subsequently demolished.

    However plans have been put into motion to construct 39 flats, with the developers having the desire to construct a mixture of different types of homes including 2 bedroom apartments. The developers also have expressed their desire to allocate a bike splace for each bedroom in the building.

    This application, from Crosslane Student Developments (UK) Ltd, would be for a student accomodation building varying between 4 and 11 storeys.

    The building would be accessible from Newport Road lane which would directly lead to a student reception area.

    Common-area facilities include a common room, media room, study rooms, as well as 104 available bike spaces

    Things to do in Splott

    There are many things to do in Splott, for instance you could visit the Star Hub which opened its doors in September 2016. The centre offers facilities such as a swimming pool, a gym and studio/fitness classes.

    Splott Cultural Scene

    Fun fact, Splott has pop-culture ties as it is featured in the third episode, 'Ghost Machine, of the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood. It is also mentioned somewhat humorously in other episodes, due to its English pronunciation, which was referred to as 'SP-LO-T' but was corrected as 'SP-LO'.
