History of Rumney

For a long-time, the area of Rumney wasn't even a part of Wales until the 1st April 1938, where the the Cardiff Extension Act 1937 incorporated it into the county borough of Cardiff, although it remained part of Monmoutshire, and England until the Local Government Act 1972 made Monmouthshire a part of Wales.

New developments in Rumney

St Edeyrns Village

St Edeyrns is a new village located in the north-east of Cardiff. The development is named St Edeyrn, after a 6th century monk. This purpose-built village provides fantastic facilities, including a primary school, local shops, allotments, a community orchard and a landscaped riverside park running along the Rhymney River.

The village offers the opportunity to purchase houses between 2 bedrooms and 4 bedrooms.

Addison House

The development in Rumney will deliver 214 new properties on the former site of Eastern high school, the composition of the build is as follows: 65 new council homes, 44 of which will be for older people and 21 two & three-bedroom houses and a further 149 properties will be for sale on the open market. 

The homes for 'older people' will be the first to be built, and they will be one and two-bedroom flats, comprising open plan living and private balconies.

The area of Rumney is great for families and professionals alike due to the many amenities in the area, there are many shopping outlets on Newport Road as well as local shops at the top of Rumney Hill. New industrial and business estates have been developed on Lamby Way which could provide employment opportunities.

Rumney's history is also on display in the older sectors of the Rumney, for instance you can visit the historic Rumney Pottery which is still in use today and also the remains of the old Rumney Castle which was a major stronghold on the South Wales coast.

There are many things to do in Rumney, for instance you could visit the shopping outlets on Newport Road as well as local shops at the top of Rumney Hill or you can go an visit some of the historical landmarks in the area such as the remains of Rumney Castle.

Rumney Cultural Scene

Even though Rumney wasn't even a part of Wales until late the 20th Century, the area still fits in with all the surrounding areas i.e Trowbridge, and Rumney just like other areas nearby has a warm, collective feeling, this is seen through its multiple independent restaurants and pubs such as the Lotus House.
