History of Plasnewydd

The origins of the name,Plasnewydd, comes from a 17th century house called "The New Place", it was originally a home of Edwards Richard and, in 1890, the house was given to the local people. It has now become the Mackintosh Community Centre.

New developments in Plasnewydd

Crofts Street

The development is looking to offer 100% affordable housing on Crofts Street, more specifically the build would offer nine, two-bedroom homes built for council rent. The homes themselves would be modular, meaning that they would have been designed and manufactured off-site in controlled conditions using the latest technology and construction materials. The benefits of this include, less time on site and high levels of sustainability and energy efficiency.


Cathays Terrace

Plans have been proposed to transform an old office block into a 24 bedroom student block, the planning application suggests that the site will have four car parking spaces available, as well as covered storage for 24 bicycles. The proposed building would be located at the crossing of three streets, Flora Street, Letty Street and Cathays Street.

Plasnewydd is a great place for both families and professionals, this is largely due to its ideal location, the area is close to the city centre and transport links such as the Cardiff Queen street station and Cardiff Central. Also, there are a plethora of schools in the area, including Marlborough Primary school and Roath Park Primary School. Naturally, due to the close proximity to the city centre, there are many excellent restaurants in the area includingg, but not limited to, Shaam Nights Restaurant and Deli Fuego.

Things to do in Plasnewydd

There are many things to do in Plasnewydd, for instance you could take a walk through the Roath Recreation ground or visit the Penylan Library and Community Centre; but if you are a foodie, then Plasnewydd is the place to be with restaurants serving food from many different cuisines including Lebanese, Syrian and Japanese, amongst others. 

Plasnewydd Cultural Scene

Plasnewydd is a very diverse area has shown by the various restaurants in the area along with the specialist foreign supermarkets, for instance there is the Cardiff Korean & Japanese Food store which specialises in offering its customers east asian groceries, and the area has an abundance of restaurants from different cultures.
