History of Heath

Heath was originally known as the Great Heath, this name came from the large park and woodland that it once contained. Much of the greenery in the area has been replaced, this is due to an initial development of traditionally middle-classed semi-detached housing between the years of 1920-1950 and more recently the construction of the University Hospital of Wales.

Heath is a ward towards the north of Cardiff. It is largely an affluent area with property prices being the third highest in the city. The area is commonly known for its traditional 1930's detached and semi-detached properties with large south facing gardens. Roads in the area are tree lined and the area benefits from large greeneries with the notable attraction of Heath Park.

New developments in Heath

Allensbank Road

Plans for 42 homes in Heath have been proposed with the developers wanting to build 12 two bedroom houses, 20 two-bedroom apartments alongside 10 council apartments of one or two bedrooms. The homes would be built to comply with the environmentally-stringent Passivhaus standards, which would allow the homes to almost be self sufficient in terms of energy use.

Pentland Close

Pentland Close is a £10 million development close to Chiltern Close and Malvern Drive, featuring 82 apartments that are targeted for older people in Cardiff. There will be a community of apartments built over five three-storey blocks. Each block will contain between 11 to 19 apartments.

The apartments will be a mix of one and two bedrooms with communal balconies and social areas, where residents can meet up and make friends.

Along with this, the area of Heath provides great amenities which can be enjoyed as a family including walking through Heath Park.

There are many great things to do in Heath, you could take a walk through Heath Park or visit some of the great restaurants in the area, including 'The Pot Bistro', which is an independent cafe serving tasty homemade French food or 'The Crispy Duch' which offers a look into modern Asian cuisine.

Heath Cultural Scene

Heath even has pop culture ties, this is through the University Hospital of Wales which was used as the subject of the television series Hospital 24/7, a documentary drama on BBC One about patients and staff of the hospital.
