History of Chiltern

Chiltern District was one of four local government districts of Buckinghamshire from 1974 to 2020. It was named after the Chiltern Hills on which the region sits. It was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the Chesham Urban District and Amersham Rural District. 

The district was abolished on 31 March 2020 and its area is now part of the unitary Buckinghamshire Council.

The museum is located in the village as the children's and short story writer Roald Dahl lived in the village in Gipsy House for 36 years until his death in 1990

Chiltern Cultural Scene

Culture plays a big part in Ashford, this is shown by the abundance of cultural activites to engage with. For instance, you could watch some of the many performances hosted by the Chilterns Theatre Company, which in the past have included James and the Giant Peach and Macbeth.
