History of Caerau

Caerau, named after the Welsh word for 'Forts', sits at the base of a hill slope on the edge of Cardiff. The Caerau hillfort was once the powerhouse for the city more than 2,000 years ago and is now an archaeologists dream; recently shale bracelets have been found at the site as well as 2,500 year old pieces of wood which are all part and parcel of the fort's jigsaw.

New developments in Caerau

Ty Newydd and Heol Trenewydd Sites

Cardiff Council has put forward plans to build 16 new homes in Caerau in order to ease excessive demand, the site will consist of six one-bedroom flats, seven two-bedroom houses, two three-bedroom houses and one four-bedroom house. The scheme is part of the council's housing development programme, which aims to deliver more than 1,000 new council homes in the city by 2022.

Church Road

The proposal is for the development of 17 affordable apartments, comprising of 13 one bedroom flats and four two-bedroom flats. The structure of the building would see the eastern side of the site measuring at 2 storeys and the northwestern corner measuring at 4 storeys.

Caerau is rich will culture and heritage, this is seen by the fact that a £1.65m community project known as the Caerau And Ely Rediscovering (CAER) Heritage Project was funded in order to reveal curate and to conserve Caerau hillfort – a monument that was once the power centre of Cardiff with a history stretching back 6,000 years.
