History of Butetown

During World War II, local authorities in Butetown attempted to ban Black American soldiers from mixing in the city's pubs, however the Butetown pub workers refused to follow the ban, which is a testament to the community of Butetown at the time.

In the 1960s, a majority of the original housing in the area was demolished including the historic Loudoun Square, the original heart of Butetown. In its place housing estate of low-rise courts and alleys, and two high rise blocks of flats were built.

New developments in Butetown

The Embankment

The development plans to build up to 2,500 new homes, a riverside park, 54,000 sq/m of business space as well as leisure, hospitality space and shops on a 40-acre site. 

There are also plans to develop the infrastructure in the area which would include a pathway between the city to the bay and access to the riverside as well as a new cycle and footbridge across the River Taff which would connect Grangetown and Butetown.

Dumballs Road

Plans are being discussed to build two huge apartment blocks. Developers would want to build 432 flats on the site of the Anchor industrial estate, thus requiring these buildings to be demolished.

The two apartment blocks would consist of 252 one-bed and 180 two-bed apartments, with balconies, a gym and home-working space. One block would be 16 storeys high and the other nine storeys.

Butetown Cultural Scene

Butetown is a diverse and multiracial area that has a significant population of Somali, Yemenis and Greek residents. Butetown is also diverse with regards to its religions, there are multiple Christian places of worship including Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas as well as places of worship for other religions including a Hindu temple on Merches Place and a mosque called Noor El Islam.
