History of Bury

History of Bury

Bury was formed around the ancient market place but there is evidence of activity dating back to the period of Roman occupation. Bury Museum has a Roman urn containing a number of small bronze coins dated for AD 253–282 and found north of what is now the town centre.
Formed in April 1974 as a result of Local Government re-organisation it was one of the ten original districts that formed the County of Greater Manchester. The Borough has an areaof 9,919 hectares (24,511 acres) and serves a population of 181,300 (Source ONS. 2002 Mid-Year Estimate).

More History...

Did you know that Bury historically was apart of Lancashire, but the district had emerged in the Industrial Revolution as a mill town manufacturing textiles.

Bury resident Sir Robert Peel was a British Prime Minister who founded the Metropolitan Police and Conservative Party. The Peel Memorial stands outside Bury parish church and the Peel Monument stands on Holcombe Hill in Ramsbottom, overlooking the borough.

What our CEO, Mary Anne Bowring, likes about Bury

Yes I have been watching Bury develop over the past few years and really is one borough oozing with potential. Did you know that Bury was formed around the ancient market place however evidence found shows that there was activity dating back to the period of Roman occupation. Bury Museum has a Roman urn containing a number of small bronze coins dated for AD 253–282 and found north of what is now the town centre. Under Agricola the road–building programme included a route from the fort at Manchester (Mamucium) to the fort at Ribchester (Bremetennacum) which ran through Radcliffe and Affetside. The modern Watling Street, which serves the Seddons Farm estate on the west side of town, follows the approximate line of the Roman road.

What is Bury famous for ?

Bury town centre is best known for its 'world famous' traditional open air market and its black pudding stalls. It was also once famous for its tripe, although this has declined in popularity in recent years, which is probably for the best. Bury is becoming increasingly popular with visitors.

The Manchester Metrolink tram system terminates in the town.

Landmarks in Bury...

There are actually many landmarks you can visit in the district , with lots of different types of history which you can learn from. Starting with Bury Art Museum, within the museum it holds the Wrigley collection of paintings, which includes works by J. M. W. Turner, Edwin Henry Landseer, John Constable and Peter De Wint. The building, by Woodhouse and Willoughby in 1899, was described by Pevsner as "probably the best building in Bury."
Then there is Bury Parish Church, on the Market Place in the centre of the town, is a Grade I listed building and Bury Castle is a fortified manor house built in the mid 13th century by Sir Thomas Pilkington and is now protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument; the foundations have been excavated and have been open to the public since 2000.
