The ward of Adamsdown may have been named after an Adam Kygnot, a porter at Cardiff Castle around 1330 AD and according to an 1824 map, Adamsdown was originally a 270-acre farm.

The Newtown area was the first area to be established as many Irish immigrants settled in the area. The streets of Newtown their names drawn from astronomy (such as Star, Constellation, and Eclipse Streets) or precious metals and stones (such as Gold, Copper and Diamond Streets).

For example, it is on Star Street that the Church of St German of Auxerrer is located. This beautiful structure was designed boti y London architects Bodley & Garner and built between 1881–84.

Adamsdown is largely a residental area and it is known as one of the older working-class suburbs of Cardiff. However, Adamsdown has undergone major regeneration, for instance, the shopping area of Clifton Street, where traditional stone buildings like the Roath Police station are located, have been aesthetically updated through sandblasting while most of the shop fronts were replaced. Furthermore, the pavements have been widened and a new one-way traffic system has been introduced, all with the intention of attracting more traders and shoppers to the area.

Howard Gardens

This application, from Crosslane Student Developments (UK) Ltd, would be for a student accomodation building varying between 4 and 11 storeys.

The building would be accessible from Newport Road lane which would directly lead to a student reception area.

Common-area facilities include a common room, media room, study rooms, as well as 104 available bike spaces

Bradley Court

The existing 1980s office building at Bradley Court, which has been empty for over a year, would be replaced with a new student accommodation building. The tower had recently been redesigned by reducing the structure by two storeys during the planning process but along with the new building, a new courtyard would be built and council officers have expressed their desire to pay £175,000 towards implementing a new crossing and improving accessibility in the area through pedestrian and cycle crossings.

Furthermore, the area has an abundance of students as the University of South Wales, Cardiff University and The Open University are located nearby.

Aside from this, the area is rich with history with notable buildings like the Church of St German of Auxerre located nearby along with the St David’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

Things to do in Adamsdown

The area holds regular, free community events and groups, so if you’re a dab hand with a paintbrush you could go down really well with the locals.

Splott Rd has plenty of things to do too, you could visit the local library or take a trip to the leisure centre where you can take a swim. There are also a fair few privately-run pubs in the area if you don’t fancy venturing to the city centre for a drink.

The area of Adamsdown is rich with culture, it brings together a cosmopolitan mixture of cultures.
